Aftercare: How Do We Care for Each Other After a Scene?

Aftercare is the physical and emotional support partners give each other after an intense experience. We explain why it's important and how to plan it.

After an intense experience, both the body and mind need some time to rest. Aftercare is when partners look out for each other during this period. Some may just need a blanket and a glass of water; others might want someone to sit quietly beside them.

Why is it important?

After the intense emotions and excitement subside, feelings of fatigue, chills, emotional sensitivity, or unexpected sadness may arise. These are normal. Aftercare eases this transition and reinforces trust.

Aftercare is not just a need for one person; everyone involved in the experience deserves attention.

Physical needs

  • Water and a light snack
  • A blanket or warm clothing
  • Sitting or lying down in a comfortable place
  • A small bandage or moisturizing cream if needed

Emotional needs

  • A calm conversation that reassures them you're there
  • Sharing feelings or not talking at all — both are okay
  • Reassuring words: "You're okay, I'm here."
  • Giving space to someone who wants to be alone for a bit

The next day matters too

Some feelings may emerge a day or two later. This is often called drop in the community. A simple message like "How are you?" the next day is often the best aftercare. One person feeling bad doesn't mean something went wrong; it's an opportunity to talk.

Plan ahead

  1. Discuss your aftercare needs with each other before the experience.
  2. Have necessary items (water, blanket, snacks) ready.
  3. Talk about how long each person can stay.
  4. Decide how you'll check in with each other the next day.

Good aftercare lays the foundation for the next experience: Trust grows in the care you show each other.
