Consent Culture: What Do SSC, RACK, and Safe Words Mean?
In BDSM, everything starts and ends with consent. We explain SSC, RACK, safe words, and why consent can be withdrawn at any time in simple terms.

What our community calls the house rule is consent. Consent is not a one-time approval to be forgotten; it is discussed, clarified, and can be withdrawn at any moment. In this article, we explain the concepts you will hear most often, in order.
SSC: Safe, Sane, Consensual
It consists of the initials of the English words Safe, Sane, Consensual. According to this approach:
- Safe: Physical and emotional risks are minimized.
- Sane: Parties know what they are doing; alcohol or other substances do not cloud their judgment.
- Consensual: Everyone agrees openly, freely, and with full knowledge.
RACK: Risk-Aware Consensual Kink
Risk-Aware Consensual Kink, meaning a relationship based on consent with awareness of risks. RACK acknowledges that nothing is completely risk-free and places the responsibility on being informed: Parties learn about, discuss, and decide on potential risks accordingly. The two approaches are not rivals; both seek to answer the same question: Does everyone truly know what they are agreeing to?
Safe word and traffic light system
A safe word is a pre-agreed word that, when said, stops everything immediately. Many people use the traffic light system:
- Green: Everything is fine, continue.
- Yellow: Slow down, check in, let's talk.
- Red: Stop. No questions, no debate.
For situations where speaking might be difficult, a non-verbal signal is also agreed upon: like dropping an object in hand or a specific hand gesture.

What you need to know about consent
"Yes" can turn into "no" at any moment, and this is always valid.
- Consent is discussed beforehand; boundaries are not expanded in the middle of something.
- Silence or lack of objection is not consent.
- Consent given once is not valid for the next time.
- New things are not tried when alcohol or fatigue makes decision-making difficult.
- Withdrawing consent does not require an explanation.
In our community
Someone you don't know on our site can only message you if you accept; you can block or report anyone you want. Reports about behavior against consent go to the top of the moderator queue. For details, you can check the Community Guidelines page.
