What is a Munch? Everything You Need to Know Before Your First Meet

A munch is a casual meet-up at a café or restaurant. What happens, how to prepare, and what to watch for on your first time — all in this guide.

The calmest way to take your first step into the community is a munch. Named after the English word "munch," these gatherings are held in public places like cafes, bakeries, or restaurants. No one dresses up, and nothing is expected from anyone. The goal is simply to meet, chat, and build trust face-to-face.

What happens at a munch?

People sit around a table, have drinks, and chat. Topics are often ordinary: work, books, events in the city, news from the community. The lifestyle is also discussed, but no one is obliged to share about themselves.

  • A munch is a social gathering; there are no games, performances, or special outfits.
  • The venue is open to everyone; conversations are kept appropriate and measured accordingly.
  • No experience is needed to join. Most newcomers feel at ease at their first munch.

Before you go

The first meeting can be exciting. A little preparation can make you feel much more comfortable.

  1. Read the event page: who is organizing it, how many people are expected, where is the venue?
  2. Send a short message to the organizer saying it's your first time attending; most organizers greet newcomers at the door.
  3. You don't have to use your real name. Your community username or a suitable nickname is enough.
  4. Plan how you'll get home in advance and let someone close know where you are.

Etiquette at the gathering

Leave what you see and hear at the munch there.

The most important rule of the community is confidentiality. Knowing someone from a munch doesn't mean you acknowledge them elsewhere; leave the greeting to them. Don't take photos of anyone or share their name or job with others.

  • Ask before touching anyone; even a hug might not be suitable for everyone.
  • Don't assume someone's role or interests; if you're curious, ask politely.
  • "No" or "I don't want to talk about that" is a complete answer.

Afterwards

Note who you met and what you liked. Most people attend a few munches before feeling at home; you don't have to connect with everyone on your first try. The community's city rooms and events page are the easiest ways to find meet-ups near you.

For all our rules, you can check the Community Guidelines page.
